My Time at NAIT

NAIT has been an interesting experience of mine academically and socially, having met friends and forming bonds in and outside the class room. My experience with my instructors has also lead to exposure of the broader side of things when it comes to the IT industry. In a somewhat corny way, I found NAIT to be my home.

I am currently a Student of the Digital Media and IT (DMIT) System Administration program, which focuses on many aspects of Microsoft and Linux systems and processes. I am going into my second year of studies as of September 2025!

While this is the focus we also attend Communication’s classes, along with Business Analysis classes, to help further our understanding on how a company runs while also working in groups.

My time during my first year of classes was dedicated to learning scripting languages (Bash, C#, and Shell), along with Windows, and Linux (Desktop, and Server) configuration.

These classes opened our eyes to professional tools such as VMWare Workstation to configure Virtual Machines according to our classwork specs, while Windows and Ubuntu Linux we’re our OS’s of choice. We used these Virtual Machine’s to troubleshoot potential issues we may face in our career and how to solve them.

When we we’re working on Windows Desktop Administration we had a lab focused on the SysPrep of a windows 10 or 11 machine, I was one of the first people to run into issues with a Shell Script our Instructor gave us, while he was providing context on why it may not be working on our machines, I figured out it was tied to both the Copilot and a font styling app baked into Windows 11, when our instructor was removing a only Copilot, when this was found we published our findings together to the class, as this was not the intended result of the lab.

We we’re also tasked to work with more nefariously used OS’s like Kali Linux to further our understanding on the importance of Cyber Security and what Ethical Hackers/White Hat’s may do on a day to day basis for a company. We also worked on subjects such as Risk Analysis and how to evaluate risk’s related to the IT space.
